First Week Speaking Map: Edinburgh

Just arrived in Edinburgh? Seven days, seven small steps to start speaking the local language with real people. Free or low-cost, official links, come alone.

Checklist

Day 1

Listen

Go and just listen for an hour. You do not have to speak yet; notice how people greet each other, order and say goodbye. Write down three phrases you hear.

Hi, I just arrived in Edinburgh and I want to practise. May I sit here?

Day 2

Ten phrases

Learn ten phrases for tonight with the First Phrases tool and say them out loud. Ten is enough: greeting, thanks, please, sorry, the bill, and a few questions.

Could you say that again, more slowly, please?

Day 3

First café

Go to your first conversation café. Arrive ten minutes early, say your level once, and speak to one person only. That is the whole goal.

Yes, I would love to. Where and when?

Day 7

Repeat the best one

Return to the café where you felt most at ease. Familiar faces are what turn practice into a habit, and this time you will understand more.
