First Week Speaking Map: Bordeaux

Just arrived in Bordeaux? Seven days, seven small steps to start speaking the local language with real people. Free or low-cost, official links, come alone.

Checklist

Tick each day as you go. Print this page for a paper copy.

Day 1

Listen

Go and just listen for an hour. You do not have to speak yet; notice how people greet each other, order and say goodbye. Write down three phrases you hear.

Hi, I just arrived in Bordeaux and I want to practise. May I sit here?

Day 2

Ten phrases

Learn ten phrases for tonight with the First Phrases tool and say them out loud. Ten is enough: greeting, thanks, please, sorry, the bill, and a few questions.

Could you say that again, more slowly, please?

Day 3

First café

Go to your first conversation café. Arrive ten minutes early, say your level once, and speak to one person only. That is the whole goal.

Hi, I am new here and learning. Is this group open to beginners?

Day 4

Tandem

Practise one-to-one in an exchange. You help with your language, they help with theirs, half an hour each. If no tandem is listed, this café is the next best room.

I am still learning, so please correct me.

Day 5

An event

Go to a real local event on your own. Come with one question to ask a stranger and leave after one conversation if you wish.

No language event is scheduled in our data right now. Browse all events for Bordeaux on the Come Alone hub.

Day 6

Say yes to one invitation

Say yes to one invitation today: a coffee, a walk, a group chat. Keep it public and short. Meet & Mint lists events near you where joining alone is normal.

Yes, I would love to. Where and when?

Day 7

Repeat the best one

Return to the café where you felt most at ease. Familiar faces are what turn practice into a habit, and this time you will understand more.
